Quel a été ton sentiment juste après ta victoire dans cet Open d'Irlande ?

"J'ai ressenti beaucoup d'émotions ! Quand j'ai vu le dernier putt de Bjorn Bulk partir, je pensais que c'était dedans, mais son ballon a tourné juste avant la fin, à quelques centimètres du trou. Avant que le ballon ne s'arrête, les Irlandais se sont jetés sur moi. Je ne savais pas quoi faire ou dire ! Quelques secondes plus tard, Bjorn est venu et a été le premier non Irlandais à me féliciter. Il a montré sa classe, c'est un grand champion. Il a remporté le premier événement auquel j'ai participé. Donc, gagner la compétition avec lui sur le podium me fait croire que j'ai brisé la dernière barrière."

Comment as-tu trouvé le niveau de la compétition ?

"Il y avait beaucoup de champions nationaux venant de plusieurs pays, des anciens vainqueurs de l'European Footgolf Tour, l'actuel champion d'Europe Jim Kuipers, l'ancien champion d'Europe David Mancino, le gagnant de l'Open d'Espagne Simon Wetzel, la majorité des joueurs de l'équipe du Royaume Uni qui disputera la Jansen Cup et le numéro 1 mondial Liam Shutes. La qualité n'aurait pas pu être beaucoup plus élevée, le tout sur un parcours incroyable."

Considères-tu cette victoire comme la plus belle depuis que tu joues au footgolf ?

"En dehors d'une victoire en Coupe du monde, qu'est-ce qui peut battre le fait de gagner un Open à domicile ? J'ai terminé troisième en Croatie en 2015, quatrième en Hongrie la saison dernière et j'ai remporté l'Open d'Irlande du Nord en octobre dernier. Cette année, je suis arrivé troisième de la première étape de notre championnat à Dublin, puis j'ai pris la huitième place de l'Open d'Espagne. La semaine dernière, c'était la troisième étape, que j'ai gagnée. Je savais que j'avais une bonne forme avant l'Open d'Irlande. Cependant, le niveau augmente encore lorsqu'il s'agit d'un tournoi l'international. Toute erreur est punie par les autres joueurs. Aujourd'hui, j'en suis à dix Top 10 depuis que j'ai commencé à jouer."

Comment as-tu découvert le footgolf ?

"Le premier parcours en Irlande s'est ouvert début 2014, à seulement 15 minutes de chez moi. J'y ai joué deux fois et j'ai vraiment apprécié, car j'ai beaucoup pratiqué le football et le golf. Le mélange était parfait pour moi. Il y avait une compétition qui était le premier Open irlandais non officiel. C'était un tournoi par équipes que j'ai fait avec mon colocataire. Nous avons joué cinq rounds ce jour-là en play-offs et nous avons finalement gagné le titre et 700 euros. J'étais devenu accro ! Pour l'anecdote, je ne pense pas que mon colocataire ait joué depuis. Il est donc invaincu ! En novembre 2014, j'ai été invité à jouer avec la première équipe irlandaise de footgolf au Championnat d'Europe EFGF en Espagne. J'ai terminé 15e et premier Irlandais."

Quel ballon utilises-tu ?

"J'utilise soit un Terrapass, soit un Teamgeist 2 (qui est le même ballon vraiment) depuis la Coupe du Monde. Là-bas, j'avais utilisé un Adidas F50 à 20 euros. J'étais jeune et stupide ! J'ai un bon stock de Terrapass maintenant."

Combien de fois par semaine joues-tu au footgolf ? As-tu un coup préféré ?

"Je ne voudrais probablement pas jouer plus d'une fois par semaine en moyenne. Quand je sors, c'est toujours pour deux ou trois rounds. Après, j'ai la chance d'avoir quatre parcours à moins d'une heure de route de chez moi. Le putt est de très loin mon coup préféré. La satisfaction de lire les pentes et de juger chaque virage jusqu'à ce que la balle frappe le mât au centre du trou, c'est brillant. Si j'ai un putt de 30 mètres et que je peux voir la ligne, j'y retourne pour le faire plusieurs fois. J'ai beaucoup amélioré ma capacité à me concentrer au cours des trois dernières années. Rien ne me distrait. Si je fais un bogey, je ne fais pas une fixation pour réalisé un birdie ensuite. J'ai joué 180 trous de footgolf en compétition cette saison sans un double bogey. Si je fais un eagle, idem. Peu importe en fait, sauf le prochain coup et le score final."

Quels sont tes objectifs sur le World Tour et l'European Tour ?

"Je pense que le World Tour se transformera en une brillante compétition une fois que les majeurs commenceront le mois prochain. Malheureusement pour moi, le seul majeur auquel je puisse assister cette saison sera la Capital Cup. Pour cette raison, le World Tour n'est pas un objectif pour moi. Mais l'European Tour l'est. Je suis actuellement classé deuxième après deux tournois, mais il y a un très long chemin à parcourir. Je prévois maintenant de jouer en Norvège et en Slovénie, puis en Allemagne et en Suisse en août. Ma saison finira probablement en Hongrie et la finale à Marrakech. J'espère obtenir un ou deux nouveaux podiums."

Quels sont tes adversaires principaux pour le titre de champion d'Irlande ?

"La qualité est très élevée et quiconque gagne le titre national sera un beau vainqueur. Nos deux premiers champions étaient Gary Mullin et Ronan Lynagh. Gary est arrivé 14e à la Coupe du Monde juste après son titre, Ronan a terminé sept fois d'affilée sur le podium et à la 3e place de l'Open d'Irlande du Nord. Ces gars sont de grands concurrents et de brillants coéquipiers. C'est d'ailleurs Ronan qui a commencé à m'aider sur l'aspect mental du jeu. Chris Grace et Jimmy Barry ont été aussi cohérents lors des deux dernières années et demi. Jimmy a terminé dans le Top 5 18 fois sur 19 événements et Chris a été sur le podium dans la moitié de ses compétitions ! À ce stade de la compétition, Kev Heelan est mon plus proche rival. Après son étonnante victoire au Portugal en fin de saison dernière, il a obtenu deux victoires et une deuxième place alors qu'il avait pris un 10 sur le deuxième trou. Il a ensuite fait -24 sur les 34 trous suivants. Il est incroyable. Lorsque nous voyageons tous ensemble, l'esprit d'équipe est formidable."

Penses-tu venir en France pour jouer une étape du championnat de France de footgolf ?

"Le coût est toujours une considération à prendre en compte, car j'essaie de participer à la tournée nationale et à la tournée européenne. Mon club est très favorable, mais si on avait plus de sponsors, ça rendrait les déplacements plus sûrs. L'année dernière, j'ai joué au Golf Parc Robert Hersant et c'était extrêmement difficile, ce que j'aime. Le temps était terrible, ce que j'aime aussi. Malheureusement, je ne peux pas faire l'Open de France cette année. Il ne fait aucun doute que le tournoi sera bien géré et qu'un grand spectacle sera mis en place. J'aimerais vraiment prendre ma revanche en France, en septembre si je suis sélectionné avec l'équipe irlandaise pour le championnat d'Europe."

What is your feeling after your victory at the Irish Open ? How was the course ? How did you find the level of the competition ?

"I had so many emotions going through my head at the same time! When I saw Bjorn Bulk’s last putt leave his boot, I thought it was in but it would turn away towards the end. In the last 2 feet, it moved just outside the cup and before the ball stopped, the Irish guys had swarmed all over me. I didn’t know what to do or say. Seconds later, Bjorn came over and was the first non-Irish player to congratulate me. He showed his class and is such a great champion. He won the first event I ever played in so to win this event with him on the podium too, feels like I’ve broken through that last barrier. The field had national champions of several countries, multiple previous EFT stage winners, the current European champion Jim Kuipers, former European champion David Mancino, Spanish Open winner Simon Wetzel and most of the UK’s Jansen Cup squad as well as current world number 1 Liam Shutes and as strong an Irish team as we could assemble. The quality couldn’t have been much higher! The course is amazing. It always features in my top 5 alongside Pilar’s World Cup course, the Jacot and Mancino courses in Morocco and Silver Birch in Wales. For me, there’s a perfect mix between left and right footed holes, long drives and narrow technical shots, bowl greens, raised tee boxes, greens guarded by rings of trees and of course the famous rooftop tee off. The 12th hole par 5 is also my favourite hole in Ireland. Highfield is totally devoted to footgolf and the Irish Open in particular. The attention to detail on the course is incredible; footgolf fairways cut into the golf fairways and the entire course reshaped just for the Open. It’s the home of Irish footgolf for all the players and will be for years to come. The Duggan family are so friendly, welcoming, hospitable and genuine that their partnership with the IFGA is valued by everyone involved at any level in footgolf in Ireland."

Is this your best result this year ?

"This is by far my best result of the season but that’s because the season is only starting. I’ve had 3 Irish Tour events prior to the Irish Open and I also competed in the Spanish Open last month which was the first stage of the European Tour 2017. Our opening event in Ireland was in Dublin; 36 holes in Deer Park Golf Club. There was only one shot separating the top 4 after one round and ultimately I came 3rd. In Spain I started very well on Day 1 but the ball didn’t drop on Day 2 and I finished 8th, losing a playoff for 7th. The Kilkenny Open was next on the Irish calendar and I played well all day, chasing down round 1 leader Kev Heelan and after 36 holes we were inseparable. Kev won the playoff on the first hole to give him back to back wins. Last week was our third round also in Dublin on the Irish Open course from 2015. I played faultlessly for the two rounds and won by two strokes so I knew I was carrying good form into the Irish Open. The standard goes up a notch though when you compete internationally as any mistake is punished by multiple players. I have ten top 10 finished now since I started playing but this win is by far the sweetest. I finished 3rd in Croatia in 2015, 4th in Hungary last season and won the Northern Ireland Open last October. But outside of a World Cup win, how could you beat winning your domestic Open ?"

How did you discover the footgolf ?

"The first course in Ireland opened in early 2014, just 15 minutes from my apartment. I had played one or two rounds and really enjoyed it as I played a lot of football and golf at the time and the hybrid was perfect for me. There was an upcoming competition which was effectively the first unofficial Irish Open. It was a pairs tournament and I entered with my housemate. We played FIVE rounds that day of head to head knockout and after 5 sudden death playoff holes, we eventually won the title and €700. I was hooked. I don’t think my housemate has played since! He retired undefeated. In November of that year, I was invited to play on the first Irish footgolf team in the EFGF European Championship in Spain. 6 of us went, I finished 15th and first Irishman. Bjorn Bulk won that day and since we both switched to the EFT under FIFG, we’ve had several battles and I hope we have many more."

Which ball do you use ?

"I’ve used either a Terrapass or Teamgeist 2 (the same ball really) since the World Cup. Over there I used a €20 Adidas F50. I was young and foolish! I have a nice stockpile of terrapasses now and that’s what I plan on sticking with for the future. This weekend I played with a 2009 Super Cup Teamgeist 2 called “Lips”. I look forward to someone discovering or creating footballs that don’t cost €300 each! One tournament we had in Ireland in 2015, we made everyone play with the exact same ball. It was a great leveller and great fun and that’s why people get into footgolf in the first instance."

How many times do you play footgolf a week ? What is your favorite stroke ?

"I probably wouldn’t play more than once a week on average. When I do go out, it’s always for two or three rounds though. I’m fortunate to have 4 courses within one hours drive of my home. There is no doubt about what shot is my favourite: always the putting. I love putting. The satisfaction of reading the slopes and judging every bit of turn until the ball hits the pin in the centre of the cup is brilliant. If I have a putt from 30 yards and I can see the line, I back myself to make it every single time. My normal play is quite boring to be honest. I sidefoot nearly every tee shot and every approach and just keep on giving myself chances to putt, it doesn’t matter from where. In practice, I will play some risky shots (chips, dinks, daisy cutters, curlers, outside of the boot etc.) just to keep improving and keep the shot in my locker in case I ever need it but when it’s competition time, I’m all sidefoot. Drive for show, putt for dough! My mental toughness is another area I have improved a lot over the last 3 years. Nothing puts me off or distracts me. If I get a bogey, I don’t chase a birdie. I’ve played 180 holes of competitive footgolf this season without a single double bogey. If I get an eagle, so what? Nothing matters except the next shot and the final score. Let others make mistakes and just keep doing the basics right, give yourself chances and the birdies will follow. I think I said to myself a hundred times on Sunday that nobody cares what you were on after 6 (I was -6 at the time), they only care what you finished on. It helped me keep focused on the job in hand. It’s one of the strongest parts of my game."

What are your goals on the World tour and on the European tour ? Which competition is the most important for you ?

"I think the World Tour will develop into a brilliant competition which everyone will see more clearly once the majors begin next month. Unfortunately for me, the only major I can attend this season will be the Capital Cup. Because of that, the World Tour is not a focus for me but the European Tour certainly is. I’m currently ranked 2nd after two events but there is a very long way to go. I now plan on playing Norway and Slovenia next, with Germany and Switzerland in August and my season will likely end with Hungary and the EFT Finale. If I claim another podium or two, I will be in with a shout by the time the finale comes around and that’s all I can ask for. Keep giving yourself chances."

In Ireland, what are your main opponents for the title of champion of Ireland ?

"As I mentioned, the quality in Ireland is very high and whoever claims the national title will be a deserved champion. Our first two champions were Gary Mullin and Ronan Lynagh. Gary came 14th in the World Cup straight after he was crowned and Ro had 7 consecutive podiums and also 3rd place in the Northern Ireland Open. These guys are great competitors and brilliant team mates. It was Ro who started helping me with the mental side of the game also. This season, we have played 4 events out of 11 with the best 8 scores counting towards the league. Chris Grace and Jimmy Barry have been so consistent for the last 2 and a half years that they will always be in with a strong shout. Jimmy has finished in the top5 18 times out of 19 events and Gracie has been on the podium in half of his finishes! The guys are class. Stephen Sawyer has been reborn this year and has 3 consecutive podiums now as he charges up the table. Looking at the tables though, Kev Heelan is my closest rival at this stage though. After his amazing victory in Portugal on the EFT at the end of last season, he started this season with two wins and a second place. That second place included taking a 10 on the second hole. He then went on to shoot -24 on the next 34 holes. The guy is incredible. When we all travel together too, the team spirit is unrivaled by any other country and I can’t wait for the event that we all hit the form that we can and win our maiden team gold in Europe."

Would you like to come to France to play a stage of the France footgolf championship ?

"I was very fortunate to make it to France by planes, ferries and cars last season. Marco Caricato even drove Kev Heelan and I nearly 3 hours out of his way to make certain that we made our flight home, which we will always be grateful for. That’s the footgolf spirit. Cost is always a consideration as I try to play the national tour and the European Tour. My club is very supportive but more sponsors would make the travelling easier for sure. Last year, I played the Golf Parc Robert Hersant and it was extremely challenging which I love. The weather was terrible which I also love so I very much enjoyed it. There is no doubt that the tournament will be well managed and a great show will be put on. Sadly I can’t make the French major this year but I will definitely look forward to taking my revenge on Robert Hersant in September if I’m selected for Ireland’s Euro Cup team and a wild card invitation for the French Finals could be ideal preparation for the EFT finale."
